Remember craft class where even the thought of stitching was enough to induce nightmares in all of us and actual sewing projects caused many a sleepless night? Well, if we had Anuj Sharma’s Button Masala project around then, it would be a pretty different story. This maverick designer has found a way to make stitching buckets of fun – he doesn’t use any needles or thread. With his method, all you need are some rubber bands and buttons. And yes, that’s enough to create ensembles fabulous enough to strut down the runway! He tells BeBEAUTIFUL how.

He came across this project by chance…

It all started when Anuj spotted a man whose clothes weren’t well buttoned. This got him thinking – what if he worked with lots of buttons and used a simple grid system, where the buttons were stitched on a fabric at a distance of two inches. The separate fabric straps had buttonholes at the same distance as the buttons. The straps were then used to drape the fabric into garments. And his collection earned him rave reviews when he showcased it at Lakmé Fashion Week.
