Liverpool have stated that UEFA have launched an investigation over a possible anti-doping rule violation by the club’s French defender Mamadou Sakho. The club have also added that while the investigation undergoes, the player stands unavailable to participate in any of the matches ahead.
Sakho, 26, will be responding to UEFA on the matter.
“Yesterday, Friday 22nd April 2016, a formal communication was received from UEFA stating that they are investigating a possible anti-doping rule violation by Mamadou Sakho,” Liverpool said in a statement on Saturday, ahead of their EPL game against Newcastle United.
“The player is currently not subject to any playing suspension. However, the club, in consultation with the player, has decided that while this process is followed the player will not be available for selection for matches.
“There will be no further comment at this time.”
DB reported that the player had failed the drug test following Liverpool’s Europa League round of 16 victory over Manchester United on March 17. The Frenchman is believed to have tested positive for a type of ‘fat burner’.
