Selena Gomez’s Fashion Evolution: From Disney Star

Selena Gomez has come an awful long way since Wizards of Waverly Place—not least with her personal style. Experimenting with different looks is a sartorial right of passage, particularly when you’ve grown up in the spotlight like this superstar. And at 24, Gomez is more fluent in forward-thinking fashion than ever.

To be fair, when Gomez first burst onto the scene, she played it on the safe side, favoring classic silhouettes that were characterized by a straightforward sense of femininity. For example, the Marchesa Notte number she wore to the 2009 Hollywood Style Awards came with a ruffled sleeve befitting a classic Disney princess. It wasn’t long before she nailed the art of red carpet elegance, perhaps most notably with her turn at the 2011 Academy Awards. All eyes were on Gomez as she arrived on the scene in a sweeping chiffon gown by Dolce & Gabbana with a Grecian goddess waist.
The thing about Gomez is that she knows how to toe the line between cool and sophisticated, working a fresh and youthful look one day and a grown-up, soigné aesthetic the next. She combined both in one fell swoop in 2013 when she appeared on The Late Show wearing a mock-neck cropped sweater with maritime buttons and a matching pencil skirt with slits up to there. It wasn’t long before she synced up with stylist Kate Young, who also works with Dakota Johnson and Natalie Portman, and began to expand her wardrobe to include more directional pieces on the red carpet. With a little help from stylist Christian Classen, Gomez continued to appeal to her young fans with her affordable everyday style, such as Rodarte & Other Stories’s sequined party dress and fur trim coat.

Gomez has also upped her personal style game from a streetwear perspective. Case in point: The cherry red Vetements sweatsuit she sported to the airport in March of last year, an ensemble she topped off with her signature aviator sunglasses and strappy stiletto sandals. She also deserves bonus points for putting a chic spin on the boudoir-dressing trend, rolling out a navy piped pajama suit in Paris a few months prior. It’s certainly a far cry from the cutesy wardrobe of her early Disney years.
