As you may or may not know, the government of Maharashtra has banned the possession and selling of beef, with offenders being penalised with up to five years in prison and a Rs. 10,000 fine. Mumbai, the cosmopolitan meat-loving city, will probably have to bid adieu to its beef classics that have put a smile on the faces of meat lovers for generations. Here are some of our favourites.
1. The Best Beef Burger – Cafe Zoe, Lower Parel
A succulent and juicy burger that’s just the right size. It’s meaty and hearty, which gives you the feeling it’s been made at home with just the right amount of love Mumbai has to give. Goodbye beef burger. You shall be missed.
2. The Best Beef Fry – Sneha’s, Mahim
In a little hole in the wall right opposite an old theatre in Mahim, lies Sneha’s. The ambience of a typical Udipi cafe gives it that South Indian charm as you expect to order dosa while waiting to get a table. But what’s the most popular dish here? It’s beef fry and Malabar parantha. Weekday or weekend, the place is always packed and if you’re not early, you may have to eat beef fry with chapatis (yuck!).
3. Best Beef Kebab – Sarvi, near Nagpada police station
Welcome to dangerous Mumbai. And if you’re a fan of the hit movie Slumdog Millionaire, you might want to take your camera along. Trying hard to be incognito like the Mumbai underworld to the outsider, this eatery sadly fails to keep its invisibility cloak on as its food is lip-smacking delicious! There is no signboard stating its presence, but the smell of beef kebabs being grilled will lead you to the right place.
4. Best Affordable Beef Steak – Imbiss, Hill Road, Bandra West
Affordable and just the right portion to fill you up. Don’t expect premium Wagyu or Kobe because this steak will take you back to the German countryside where meat and potatoes are a delight to the senses.
5. Best Tenderloin Steak, Smoke House Deli
This steak is as classic as it gets, served with a side of grilled vegetables and potato wedges.
