Dalit hanged by UP panchayat over affair, family alleges

A 28-year-old dalit man was allegedly hanged to death by a panchayat at Nagla Tota in Bulandhahr for having an affair with a married woman, his family alleged on Wednesday.

The police said they were investigating the allegation but no complaint was filed. Lala, according to a family member, was first thrashed and then ‘sentenced to hang till death’ after the woman’s husband caught them in a compromising position.

“Lala and this woman were in a relationship before she got married to someone else. But six months ago, she eloped with Lala and the duo stayed in Dehradun for a while,” said Surender, Lala’s uncle.

“On Tuesday, Lala had gone to meet her. But the woman’s husband caught him. He raised an alarm and villagers gathered within minutes. Lala was trapped,” he added. Lala was hanged from a tree for the whole village to see. The police said the body had been sent for an autopsy.

The Bulandshahr SSP said, “The police have still not received any complaint.”
