Another two were seriously injured after three men dressed as members of the Garda ERU burst into the Regency Hotel – armed with what is believed to be AK-47s – while the weigh-in for a boxing event tomorrow night in the National Stadium took place.
In a statement this evening, the Boxing Union of Ireland confirmed that tonight’s card at the Roadstone Club in Kingswood and tomorrow’s fights at the National Stadium will not go ahead.
“Following the incident at today’s weigh-in, the boxing events scheduled to take place this evening and tomorrow in Dublin are cancelled. The safety of the public, boxers and staff are of paramount importance to us.”
Tomorrow’s card was due to include two WBO title fights with Ireland’s Jamie Kavanagh – a promising lightweight – headlining the event while there was was strong local interest in both Philip Sutcliffe Jnr and Stephen Ormond, a former European lightweight champ.
Tonight in Roadstone, Luke Keeler was due in the ring while heavyweight Sean Turner was to headline the event. Here are the fights that were due to go ahead in the National Stadium tomorrow night which was due to be aired live on BoxNation TV.
