The couple and their two-year-old daughter were driving through Trujillo in Peru when their car was engulfed by a massive sinkhole. Witnesses filmed the dramatic rescue as passers-by desperately tried to help the family.
The footage shows one of the rescuers hanging on a make-shift rope tied to the front door of the car.The man, who is laying flat on the tarmac, holds open the door of the car while other rescuers try to free the rest of the family.
The woman then climbs up through the car, grabs another rope and escapes through a side window. Edgar Orlando Bartolo Silva, who was trapped in the car with his girlfriend and their two-year-old daughter told Peru: ‘Some people helped us, but we were scared, because water began to filter into the vehicle.’
The sinkhole is believed to have appeared because of the heavy rain in the area last week.
