A former professor of Gujarat University has claimed there are several discrepancies in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Masters in Arts degree from the varsity. Jayantibhai Patel, who was a political science professor, said the subjects mentioned in the degree were not part of the university’s syllabus when Modi was studying there. Patel, who was a professor at the university from 1969 to 1983, added that Modi was an irregular student with poor attendance. “We used to have discussions, debates on various issues in our classes, but Modi never participated,” he said.
However, Gujarat University Registrar Dr Mahesh Patel refuted Jayantibhai Patel’s allegations, saying the marksheet being shown was prepared 30 years ago and that the subjects mentioned were offered at that time.Meanwhile, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia has written to Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi, seeking a joint inspection of the documents related to Modi’s degree from the varsity. “…We will share the conclusions in a joint press conference and upload the documents on the website,” the Aam Aadmi Party leader said in the two-page letter. Sisodia also questioned DU’s reluctance to make Modi’s degree public, saying most universities would take pride publicising the prime minister as an alumnus.
The AAP has been demanding that Modi’s bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Gujarat University and Delhi University be made public, claiming that his educational qualifications are fake. It had alleged that it was not the prime minister but his namesake who graduated from Delhi University in 1978.
Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal had written to Delhi University last week, asking it to put up details of Modi’s degree on its website for the public and to make sure that the degree documents were “safe”. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party called the allegation baseless and asked AAP to apologise for making such accusations against the prime minister and defaming the nation. Later, the registrar of Delhi University Modi’s Bachelor of Arts degree is authentic.
