Within three months of the launch of flagship OnePlus 2 smartphone, Chinese startup OnePlus is back with the OnePlus X. This new phone, the third from OnePlus, will be available in Onyx and Ceramic versions. The Onyx version is priced Rs 16,999 and will be available through an invite only flash sale on Amazon.in on November 5. The Ceramic version will cost Rs 22,999 but will be a limited edition with just 10,000 units becoming available later.
Surprisingly, in August during the launch of OnePlus 2, when co-founder Carl Pei was asked about this “third smartphone”, he had denied then. Pei told DailyBouncer.com that OnePlus 2 would be the only flagship smartphone for 2015.
While OnePlus might argue that the OnePlus X is not a flagship product, there seems to be compulsions behind OnePlus launching the X version in such haste, especially when it once boasted about an “Apple-like one device an year ” policy. Market dynamics could be a reason. Or, may be OnePlus doesn’t want to let go off the opportunity in sub-Rs 20,000 market.
OnePlus India general manager Vikas Agarwal in reply to this said, “We are still following our one flagship device per year policy. The OnePlus X targets a different segment altogether. We did not want to reveal our plans of launching the X version when the OnePlus 2 launched. However, OnePlus X was always in our agenda. And it is not a run-off-the-mill product that we have launched in haste.”
Today, the company also said the OnePlus One will continue to sell at least till the end of this year. “We will continue with OnePlus One at least till December,” confirmed Agarwal.
The OnePlus X versions will both have 5-inch Full HD OLED screens and will be powered by Snapdragon 801 processors clocked at 2.3 GHz with 3GB RAM. They will have 16GB storage and a 2,525mAh battery. The phones offer a 13MP f/2.2 ISO cell rear camera and 8MP front camera.
